As I sit writing this blog it is 12 days 20 hours and 46 mins (approximately) since I last trained. Which needless to say I am finding a little frustrating but I must remain focused on the end result and not the current setback.
Setback: My hamstring and back have become agitated and are preventing me from doing any exercise, so I'm following instructions and taking it easy.
Rehabilitation: The physiotherapy has been going well, although I still find myself quite apprehensive when a new exercise is introduced. However, my physio has done a great job of convincing me that although my ankle was annihilated, reconstructed and immobilised for three months it is now actually pretty solid and we can gradually increase the demands placed on it. So we've been doing some fun exercises like playing catch whilst jumping on a trampette, walking the tightrope on foam rollers and my favourite ‘the lunge game'.
Proprioception: Apparently it's something to do with your ability to balance on one leg with your eyes shut. I say apparently as I am still finding this incredibly hard, even on the leg that hasn't been injured. Still, it gives me a mini-challenge to work on!
Ankle: The residual swelling has almost disappeared and I am happy to report I actually have two ankles! I'm looking forward to when I can report that I have normal legs again, my left leg shrunk whilst in plaster and still looks funny.
Running: Prior to the setback I had been given clearance to run, and successfully completed two whole minutes on a treadmill! It felt good though and I can't wait to get back on the open road.
Boxing: My boxing technique has improved (or at least I think it has!) since the cast came off, although I need to master the art of breathing as well as punching. Apparently going hypoxic is not a recommended fight strategy and according to Chris they don't give breaks during the rounds to get your breath back.
Reading Half Marathon: This is my next scheduled challenge, and I'm not even able to train at the moment. The question on my mind at the moment is "can I go from zero to 13.1 miles in ten weeks?"...
Thought of the day: It may feel like you're getting nowhere when you're taking baby steps, but if you don't take them then you'll never be able to run anywhere.
