Another achievement from Helen Blake as she completes Tough Guy

As a 'tick in the box' person, Tough Guy had for a long time been on my radar as an ultimate challenge of physical and mental fitness.

Helen Blake under water at Tough GuyTough Guy is billed by the organiser as "where you face finding fear" and my worries were increasing due to helpful phrases in the pre-race instructions such as "Death Warrant" (signing away any rights to sue for injuries) and 'ensure
your tetanus vaccination is up to date'.

I should also explain that I don't really like heights and the prospect of being stuck in a dark muddy sewer pipe was similarly unappealing. In a bid to assuage my fear I turned to a number for sources for help:

  • FEAR according to the dictionary is a 'feeling of distress or apprehension caused by impending danger/pain
  • FEAR on http://www.helpfulphrases.youreallythinkisgoingtohelp.com/
was slightly better, 'False Emotion Appearing Real'
  • The description that I thought could be of particular use was 'Forget Everything And Run'

Helen Blake in the mud at Tough GuySo there I was at the start line of Tough Guy Nettle Warrior along with thousands of others ready to do battle. A cross country run led to a slalom of 12 ascents and descents of a 45º slope. Then another run onto small obstacles before we got to 'The Killing Fields'! Here we found a set of fiendishly evil obstacles all of which to a greater or lesser extent, usually greater, involved heights, water and lots of mud.

All I had to do was conquer them by any means possible. And I did!
